Biographical Information

Principal George Aulenbacher has transformed Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Charleston into a place of strong academic growth. By instituting numerous reforms such as single-gender core classes, 80 minutes of math instruction, and co-teaching with full inclusion in all three grade levels (6-8), Aulenbacher has helped increase test scores in both math and reading, particularly among special education students, minorities, and students of low socioeconomic status. Aulenbacher created a program called Principal Talks, in which students are invited to meet one-on-one with him to discuss their academic goals and performance on the West Virginia Educational Standards Test (WESTEST). He also implemented a week-long summer school for incoming sixth graders, introducing them to the school, its teachers and expectations. In 2006-07, his seventh graders experienced a nine percent increase on the writing assessment, the third highest gain in Kanawha County. Attendance at the school that same year was the fourth highest among all middle schools in the district. He serves on Leadership Academy staff for Kanawha County Schools and has presented at several state and national conferences.
