Biographical Information
The students looking out the window in Alex Briasco-Brin's math class aren't daydreaming; they're observing passing vehicles with stopwatches to calculate whether cars are traveling above or below the posted speed limit. Making math meaningful and relevant to daily life is one way that this innovative teacher keeps his students interested and involved. He also provides differentiated instruction, ensuring that every student is learning the required concepts. Highly skilled in the use of technology, Mr. Briasco-Brin developed his own computer program for his students to use in practice, drills and exploration. To help make academics as popular as athletics, he organized an evening awards assembly to recognize the school's outstanding "mathletes." With such infectious enthusiasm for his subject, it's easy to see why one-third of the entire school population participates in his math competitions and students who were once math-phobic are now members of the math club.
