Biographical Information

English teacher and department chair Sherri Becker maintains a student-centered, project-based atmosphere in her classroom at Mitchell Middle School in Mitchell. When teaching The Diary of Anne Frank, Mrs. Becker sections off an area of her classroom the size of Anne's apartment, where students are required to complete their assignments in silence. Using context-based instruction, in which reading, vocabulary, writing, literature, listening, and technology are integrated into a single thematic unit of study, Mrs. Becker has helped students achieve the school's top scores in the verbal section of the SAT. She developed professional development units for the statewide Learning Organizations for Technology Integration (LOFTI) project, designed to help educators develop the knowledge and skills to teach in a changing technological world. Mrs. Becker monitors and maintains a wireless computer lab used throughout the English department.
