Biographical Information
At Gallegos Elementary School in Houston, third-grade bilingual and gifted-and-talented teacher Milagros Henríquez has implemented an integrated critical thinking curriculum she co-developed at the Organization for the Development of Thinking Skills in her native country of Puerto Rico. Aligning this curriculum to her district's objectives, Mrs. Henríquez engages her students in creative hands-on projects, having them excavate for bones in a unit on dinosaurs and write a proposal to school administrators to acquire a hamster for their classroom. She engages families in the educational process by sending students home with backpacks filled with a book, instructions, learning materials and a journal. She has been a grade-level chair and has represented the school on various district committees. Mrs. Henríquez also hosts and guides student teachers and mentors new teachers through the district's mentoring program.
