Biographical Information
Teachers from South Dakota and beyond often travel to Rapid Valley Elementary School in Rapid City to observe Kari L. Jungclaus' multiage classroom of fourth and fifth graders. Using technology and hands-on materials, Ms. Jungclaus delivers individualized, child-centered instruction and makes learning fun by singing songs, reciting poems and playing the piano. Her creative learning activities include the Crayon Factory, in which students collect old crayons, melt and remold them, then distribute them to classrooms and daycare centers. At a special end-of-year Celebration of Learning, Ms. Jungclaus' students share portfolios of their work with parents, reading from journals and showing videos of special events held during the year. An expert in multiage instruction, Ms. Jungclaus has made presentations on the multiage concept at school districts on the nearby Indian reservation and at the National Multiage Conference in Indianapolis.
