Often described as a champion of disadvantaged students, Delia Armstrong-Busby is more than principal of Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs. Although her school is located in a neighborhood rife with drug and alcohol abuse, gangs, unemployment and vandalism, she has created an orderly and safe learning oasis within the walls of Mitchell High. Her management style can be characterized by vision, perseverance, team building and political savvy. This includes coordinating efforts of the police department, senior citizens, apartment managers, neighbors, realtors, parents, the business community, staff and students to mitigate the negative influences of the surrounding area, stressing the positive aspects of school life.
