Biographical Information

Nick Salerno is assistant superintendent of the El Monte Union High School District in El Monte, a position he has held since 1999. Previously he was principal at El Monte High School, where his leadership helped the school earn recognition as a California Drop Out Prevention School of the Year, a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School. As assistant superintendent, Salerno has continued to put student achievement first. "Human capital is our most precious resource," he said, "so it is especially important to serve in an area where there are high-need students." Salerno's district, with its low socio-economic data and high number of English learners, is one of very few districts to have no schools in Program Improvement status. Correspondingly, the district's schools have exhibited some of the highest growth rates in the state since the inception of No Child Left Behind. Salerno has been honored with the H.B. McDaniel Student Support Services Award, and was most recently named Alumnus of the Year by Cal Poly Pomona's College of Education & Integrative Studies.
