"Reading is the most important business in my classroom and that message is loud and clear," says Kimi Kinoshita, a first-grade teacher at Mistletoe Elementary School in Redding. Ms. Kinoshita has directed a number of focus institutes for the California Reading and Literature Project and serves on that organization's policy board. Her commitment to literacy is equaled by her belief in multicultural education, and to this end she received a CLAD (Cross-cultural, Language and Academic Development) certificate, which enables her to better serve the students she teaches. By working with a bilingual aide in her classroom and introducing a policy of interpreters at all school events, Ms. Kinoshita has made an important contribution to the community of English language learners served by her school.
